Last week, our family moved, which stirred a mix of emotions and demanded significant effort. Moving can significantly affect the atmosphere and dynamics within a family. I enjoy change and need a fresh start, but not everyone in our family handles change well. We had a family discussion about how we wanted the new space to look and feel. We decided to move uptown, a choice that wasn't initially planned but felt right. Our aim was to be closer to school, family, friends, work, and a vibrant community we knew but hadn't lived in before; we wanted something familiar yet slightly different, if that makes sense. We found a cozy and bright new home on a residential street, yet right in the city, offering the best of both worlds: quiet and accessible.
Our move wasn't just about securing a new residence; it was a chance for personal development and introspection. We had all evolved, with the boys now in their teenage years, navigating a distinct stage of life. My husband and I have grown a bit older ;) and desired access to community amenities, such as nature and convenience. We thought about how our new home and location could bring more ease and simplicity to our lives.
The Journey of Letting Go
As we prepared for the move, we realized that over the years, we had accumulated a substantial number of belongings. We stored many of our possessions in a storage unit, which, in hindsight, was a terrible decision. I would never store things again, but this is how we learn, right? From our mistakes. Many items no longer served a purpose or brought us joy. We consciously decided to donate a large portion—about 60% of our belongings—to make room for new energy in our lives.
This act of letting go was liberating. It reminded us of the simplicity we wanted to embrace in our new home. Our goal was to create a space where life feels lighter and brighter. We replaced clutter with simplicity, crafting a serene environment ideal for family growth.

Practical Changes for a Light-filled Life
To promote a simpler lifestyle, I thoughtfully considered what I wanted life to look and feel like, and I discussed the concept of simplicity with the boys and my husband, including the reasons behind it and how we might implement it. We all agreed on some common themes, and everything began to come together very organically. We developed key principles for our new home. These changes and ideas were intended to help us minimize distractions and live our fullest lives:
Neutral Colors
We chose neutral palettes for our décor, which made our space appear more open and inviting. Research indicates that neutral colors can reduce stress, fostering a soothing environment. We selected multifunctional furniture, such as benches and futons, which can also accommodate our frequently visiting friends. We opted for washable fabrics and rugs. We made a concerted effort to avoid purchasing new items, instead using only what we already had and cherished.
One In, One Out
We will try to stick to a practical rule: for anything new that comes in, something else must go out. This principle has helped us stay focused on what truly matters and prevents clutter. We used to apply this when the boys were young with their toys; we would give away items they no longer played with to friends before bringing anything new into the home.
Space to Move
Open spaces for movement are essential, especially with two teenage boys. We designated sections in an upstairs loft where they can unwind, invite friends, study, and a spot for me to practice yoga, meditate, or sit and read a book or write a blog. The open area will also serve as an office and a place for small projects, etc.
Maximize Natural Light
What I love most about our new home is the natural light. During our initial visit, I was captivated by its openness and brightness. The windows have light roll-up blinds, but they are mostly open, allowing the light to be utterly beautiful. Although we have less outdoor space, the natural light more than makes up for it.
Prevent Overconsumption & Build a Capsule Wardrobe
I am in the process of creating a capsule wardrobe for spring and kept this concept in mind while packing clothes and items from our closet that we haven't worn or used in over a year. There is a wonderful shelter nearby that was requesting women's clothes and warm men's clothing. This action served two purposes and felt really good to me. Embracing the idea of not buying things I don't need actually excites me. I have started a Pinterest board on the capsule wardrobe concept, a curated collection of clothing that promotes intentional dressing. This change simplifies our mornings and reduces decision fatigue. I would rather buy a few things that are good quality and more expensive than things I don't need or love, only to not wear them and be wasteful. To be totally transparent, this will be something I will need to be very intentional about, as I love to shop and I love fashion, even though I've lived in joggers for the last 6 months.

Prioritize Non-Toxic and Non-Plastics
We made a deliberate decision to create a non-toxic environment at home. We now avoid using plastics in kitchen utensils and storage, choosing glass or stainless steel instead. This decision has allowed us to establish healthier living conditions. After my breast cancer scare last summer and learning much more about the importance of being mindful of the products we use in our homes for cleaning, on our bodies, and, of course, in our food, I am working on developing new, healthier, non-toxic habits and routines in our new space that benefit both us and the environment. I only brought in non-toxic laundry soap, dish soap, and hand soap, and I changed all my makeup and skincare products as my Christmas gift.
Air-Cleansing Plants
I couldn't bring all my plants to our new home. Yes, I "had" an excessive obsession with plants, lol - so I shared some with friends before the move, repotted many to combine smaller ones into larger pots, and took the low-maintenance plants that are good for air purification. I'll also be careful not to add more plants to the new space for a while to see what's missing and avoid overconsumption. We kept all our houseplants known for their air-purifying properties. For instance, peace lilies and snake plants not only beautify our home but also help clean the air, enhancing our overall well-being.

Create a Cozy Nook
My aim was to transform our bedroom into a cozy, minimalist haven. Instead of filling the room with many items, I opted for linen duvet covers, a few large, comfortable pillows, and touches of white taupe and natural wood. I chose not to include a TV and intend to keep electronics out of the room. We've established a snug corner in our home for relaxation, serving as a retreat for reading and quiet reflection, vital for a light, bright life. I carefully avoided introducing chaos into the space designated for sleep and rest.

Community Connection
We are all thrilled to explore a new community. The boys will be actively involved in the local hockey scene, which is conveniently linked to the school my son attends and where my husband works. I am eager to walk and reconnect with friends who will be nearby again, and to find a yoga studio that feels like a second home. I have truly missed practicing yoga in a studio. I'm on the lookout for a good bulk food store, fruit market, and coffee shop. Today, we are heading out on the Beltline walking trail with our dog, Bowie. Our new street seems to have many other families in a similar phase as us, staying in the city long enough to get kids through school and hoping to eventually buy a place outside the city. It's fascinating to meet other families like ours who sold their homes during COVID and are still trying to settle or are in-between like us.
Peaceful Bathroom Retreat
We are lucky to have a bathroom that accommodates long soaks and relaxation, while the other two offer enough space for others to shower and get ready, considering our different schedules. We looked at many other places before selecting this one, and it was surprising how many lacked a bathtub. I honestly couldn't imagine living in a place without one, could you? We've transformed our bathroom into a peaceful sanctuary for soothing baths. By adding natural elements and calming scents, it enhances our self-care routines and reminds us to pause amidst life's busyness. It's one of my favorite rooms and a cherished part of our new home.

One Car Family
We recently become a one-car family, realizing that the second car was often unused, and the funds could be better utilized elsewhere. When searching for a new home, we prioritized proximity to transit and ample walking options. I believe this decision couldn't have worked out better for us. Ultimately, we chose to restrict our family to one car, simplifying logistics and encouraging us to walk and engage in the city.
The Path to Mindful Living

This journey has been challenging; it took us quite some time to decide where to relocate and settle. In some ways, the delay in our decision-making was a hidden blessing, as staying in the city longer allowed me to receive excellent medical care during my health journey over the past year. I began to envision a place for us, something truly different where we could be happy. I manifested what I hoped for, envisioning lots of light and a place that we could make our own. I kept sending my energy out toward something to come to us, wishing and hoping that if we were patient, the right place would come. I wanted to change our energy and the flow of our family. We cherished where we had been living for the past few years, but our family had grown distant, and we weren't engaged in a community because everything we needed was elsewhere. Our move uptown will help us all embrace simplicity. It's only been a few days, but I see that the boys are enjoying their new space, and being close to daily necessities is such a delight. Tasks take less time, we need fewer things, we accomplish more, and in turn, we will have more time together or doing the things that bring us joy. I see new routines forming and feel a different energy and light that I've been craving. I feel really grateful, I truly do.
Moving is exhausting and can be quite daunting. I hoped our relocation would carry a deeper meaning and sought to bring about healthy, simple positive changes for my family and myself. I'm excited about the new adventure as we explore the vibrant life surrounding us. I've realized that the best path forward is to trust the journey, live with purpose, and create an environment where love, connection, and simplicity flourish! Life is full of surprises; as I stepped out the front door this morning, I felt very optimistic, excited, and truly at home.
As always, take good care XO
