Let's Take a Walk

Updated: Nov 28, 2024

Walking is one of life's simplest pleasures. Whether it’s a stroll through a park, a wander around your neighborhood, or a brisk walk on a nature trail, walking has an amazing ability to refresh our minds and lift our spirits. Each step taken is a step toward reconnecting with our surroundings and enjoying the moment. It's proof that sometimes, the best things in life are the simplest. I think the simplicity of walking is what I love best.

Walking offers numerous advantages. Both physically and mentally, we benefit greatly from a walk. As we grow older, it's important to allow ourselves to engage in gentler forms of exercise. High-intensity workouts can sometimes do more harm than good. Walking promotes heart health, strengthens and protects joints, boosts energy, and enhances mood. Never underestimate the power of a good walk.

Walking together several times a week has become a routine for my husband and me. It is the perfect opportunity for us to have meaningful discussions and make decisions. Being present with each other during these walks is especially important when life gets hectic.

Every now and then, I reach for his hand as we walk, as it enhances my sense of connection.

Refreshing Your Thoughts

Walking allows our minds to roam, think, and create without the interruptions of daily life. The soothing rhythm of our steps can inspire new ideas and solutions to the challenges we encounter. Often, if I'm trying to resolve a problem or clear my mind of a concern or conflict, taking a walk offers me a sense of space and fresh air, and it often helps me manage situations with less reactivity.

Research indicates that engaging in regular physical activity, like walking, can significantly reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, with some studies showing up to a 50% decrease in depressive symptoms for those who exercise consistently. The outdoors provides even more benefits: natural light and fresh air can boost our mood and enhance our physical well-being. Make sure you get your dose of Vitamin D whenever you can!!!!!

My New Obsession: The Weighted Vest!

If you want to maximize the benefits of your walks, consider investing in a weighted vest. Adding weight to your routine can significantly elevate your heart rate, leading to a greater calorie burn, improved cardiovascular fitness, and stronger muscles. Research shows that exercising with extra weight can increase your body's ability to adapt and strengthen much faster.

Personally, I find that it helps me feel centered, especially in my core and thighs. I enjoy the concept of combining walking with strength training. As a woman in her 50s, I am increasingly conscious of the importance of maintaining strong muscles and taking care of my bones.

Fun fact, incorporating an extra 10% of your body weight can boost your calorie burn by approximately 15%, turning a leisurely walk into an effective workout.

Hopefully, this blog inspires you to continue walking if you already enjoy it, and to walk more if you don't. It could spark your interest in trying out a weighted vest, walking sticks, or other items to enhance your walking experience.

Go for that walk, I guarantee you won't be let down.

As always, take good care XO
